The Landau restaurant at the Langham Hotel has a striking dining room, oval shaped, wood panelling and a vaulting ceiling. Just beautiful.
We knew why we were there, we were there to try their chefs tasting menu with a wine pairing. Our order was taken and clarification of our preference of a cheese board was noted, as was our wish to have dessert before cheese. Perhaps a little cheeky to request in a French family named restaurant, however no true born Brit could imagine interrupting a binge of cheese with some sweet dessert. Needs must.
We started our night with a lovely glass of champagne and we were given time to relax into the evening with it. First up was a blue prawn both crisp and tartare with Hass avocado and Oscietra caviar, this was served with a glass of Riesling Troken, Rupertsberger, Germany 2009, I was excited to get started and loved the colour of the avocado against the slate, very striking.
Our starter was followed by Quail, fennal and verjus marinated peach, served with a glass of Château Cabezac, AOC Minervios La Tradition Rosé, France 2011. The quail was very tender and the peach was a lovely burst of flavour along with the richness of the quail. Roll on next course!
Suckling pig was up next, roasted loin of suckling pig with crackling, toasted corn and bacon marmalade. YUM! Bold flavours and very more-ish. Our photo doesn’t do it justice, but it was awesome. I haven’t had pork in a while so this was quite a treat, rich but perfectly balanced. My boyfriend laughed as we had both kept the crackling for last as we rarely have good crackling and wanted to savour it and hear the crunch.
Our waitress remembered our dessert before cheese request and our sommelier poured for us a fantastic dessert wine (so much so that we asked for seconds, I love dessert wines). It was a Jurançon, Clos Thou, Henri Laplace, France 2010. The dessert did not disappoint either. An almond gâteau with iced parfait and fresh apricots. The wine matched it perfectly.
Last and definitely not least was the cheese. The trolley was brought over to us and each cheese explained, a mix of British and French cheeses, the perfect way to end a delightful meal with great company.
